We have a Technology Guide for New Students and below are some frequently asked questions about technology at Furman that might be useful to you.

How do I connect to the internet? Furman provides two different networks to connect to the internet depending on where you are. You will want to make sure you are setup for both networks.

  • MyResnet– MyResnet provides internet connections in the residence halls. Assistance connecting to the residence halls network is available from MyResnet
  • FU-Student– The Furman wireless network is available in campus buildings other than the residence halls. You will need to register your devices to connect to this network and your computer must have the university’s antivirus and network access control clients installed, along with all current operating system updates. Follow these steps to connect to the FU-Student wireless and additional assistance is available from Furman’s IT Service Center.

Is there TV service in the residence halls?  Furman students are encouraged to use their own streaming subscriptions (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.) on personal devices or smart TVs.

Should I bring a printer? You may bring a printer, but printers are available in most academic buildings, several general-purpose labs and some residence halls. You can print to the university printers using a lab computer or by using Papercut web print. Check here for printer locations on campus.

Need help getting your computer or mobile devices ready for the fall semester? The IT Service Center will have special resources available on the lower level of the library to help from August 21-25.

  • August 21: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • August 22: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • August 23: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • August 24: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • August 25: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Important to note:

  • Please bring your computer power supply with you, we will need it to begin working on your computer.
  • Install operating system updates before coming to campus. This will really speed up the process!

Is it possible to get a copy of Microsoft Office for my computer and other devices? Yes! Office is available for free while you are a Furman student. Click here for instructions on how to install Office 365 on a personal computer.

Can I use my Furman email for personal use? While you can use your Furman email for personal use, we strongly recommend that you set up a personal email address for subscriptions, job opportunities, grad school applications, etc. This will greatly ease the transition to your post-Furman life.

Can I get help with other technology questions? Yes, please contact us at the IT Service Center (ITSC) for any technology questions you may have. While we can’t answer every question, we do our best to help whenever we can.
